Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is
observed by Muslims all over the world as a month of fasting to commemorate the
first revelation of the Quran according to the Islamic belief. This annual
observance is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam. The word Ramadan is
coming from Arabic word that means scorching and dryness.
Fasting the month of the Ramadan was made obligatory during
the month of Shaaban, Muslims migrated from mecca and medina. The spiritual
rewards for fasting also multiplied during the month of the Ramadan.
Muslims also engaged
in increased prayer and charity during Ramadan. The Ramadan is also a holy
month where Muslims try to practice increased self-discipline. Before starting
of the Ramadan, the gates of paradise are opened and gates of the hell are
locked up as well as devil are put in chains.
Ramadan is a time of
spiritual reflection, improvement and increased devotion and worship. Muslims
are expected to put more effort into the following teaching of Islam. Muslims
also restrain from sexual relationship and sinful behavior and speech so that’s
why, we can say that Ramadan is the month that provide the spirit of the
Muslims.
Ramadan is called in the west for its culinary delicate and
fancy iftaars. The spirit of the Ramadan lies in a human transformation and
inner spiritual journey. The Ramadan is really a source of peace and solace.
Fasting is the attachment to the divine of the human beings. Fasting in the
Ramadan is self-purification and inner life that bring about the values for
example generosity, kindness and forgiveness.
Throughout the day
Muslims abstain from food, water and anything else. We pray in the afternoon
and whole day in the mosque and waits for the sunset to break the fast. This is
very communal activity rather than an individual act. This is obligatory on the
Muslims to fast 30 days in the Ramadan. The act of the fasting is not only an
exercise but also an act of the self-improvement of the one man.
